Secret Garden Project

Arbortecture

Arbortecture is a term that has developed in recent years to describe the phenomenon where plants and trees grow, uninvited, out of cracks in the walls of buildings.  It is extraordinary how, even in the most urban, grey and seemingly hostile environment nature can still prevail.  This phenomenon has much resonance with the themes and threads behind Secret Garden Project (so much so that it became the inspiration behind the project's identity), and it also connects with our partner, Islington Council's "Greening the Grey" strategy.  At first it's almost imperceptible, but once you are aware, you will see evidence all over the city of nature's tenacious endeavours to green the grey.

While the artists involved in this project are intervening with existing secret gardens or creating new botanical and ecological environments in grey, urban corners; we'd like to also build up an image bank of nature's retaliation to, or enhancement of, the urban sprawl.  Please send us any examples you come across to arbortecture@upprojects.com and we will add them here:
